Pet-Friendly Advice when Finding a New Home – Featured in the Star-Advertiser

Did you know that more than half of the residents in the U.S. have a pet? According to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, nearly 63 percent of households in the U.S. own a dog and 43 percent own a cat. Many homeowners have more than one pet and the latest reports claim there are over 89 million dogs and 94 million cats in the U.S. alone!

With the flurry of recent home sales, there are many new buyers relocating to Hawaii from the mainland and sales activity between the neighbor islands as well.

But, even if you’re just relocating to a new neighborhood on the same island, it is an exciting life event for the entire ohana, including your pets. You’ll want to make sure your pets’ needs are met in your new home environment and that they are safe and comfortable as they adapt to their new surroundings.

Jenni Lee (R) of Corcoran Pacific Properties is a volunteer on the board of directors for the Hawaii Island Humane Society, an animal lover with five cats and four dogs, and knowledgeable in real estate transactions that include relocation for families and individuals with pets.

Committed to the welfare of animals, Jenni donates a portion of her commission from every one of her completed transactions to the Humane Society, as well as time during her days off.

“I’ve got my paws in real estate and firmly believe that no one should ever have to choose between their pet and a place to live,” says Jenni.

Home buying can be frustrating if you do not receive pet friendly advice.

“From selecting an airline and carrier crate requirements to current state quarantine rules and procedures, buyers can easily become overwhelmed with sadness and confusion. This doesn’t have to be the case if your realtor understands the importance of your relationship between you and your pet. Providing advice from which condominiums are pet friendly, nearby dog parks, best veterinarians near their new home, pet sitters and pet walkers can provide the comfort and peace of mind that homebuyers often seek,” said Jenni.

“As we navigate our way through this challenging pandemic, property viewing and walk throughs are conducted virtually to protect everyone. But, it can be difficult for a buyer with a pet who needs the reassurance that the property is securely fenced, or the building is pet friendly and safe. When it’s time to pack up and move, you’ll want your four-legged family member to move with you in the most stress-free environment possible.

“Your home is only perfect if it’s perfect for your entire family, including your pets!”

When arriving in your new home, Jenni suggests treating your pet like royalty as they adjust to their new surroundings.

“Try to spend some extra time with them so they become familiar with the property and feel safe. By establishing a routine quickly, it will certainly help your pet adjust.”
